Shattuck-St. Mary’s Forest City

Forest City International School (located within Forest City in Gelang Patah, Johor State, Malaysia) opened in 2018 as an international school serving students from early childhood to age 18, situated on a lush green island. The school adopts an American-style K-12 curriculum and offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses at the high school level, providing education aimed at university admissions worldwide. Throughout all grade levels, the school implements inquiry-based and project-based learning with small class sizes, offering diverse growth paths in academics, arts, sports, and technology to cultivate global perspectives and independence. Additionally, the campus features the “Golf Centre of Excellence,” a specialized golf training facility offering three levels (Beginner, Development, Elite) from beginners to experienced players, with PGA-level directors providing education combining theory and practice.

Programs

Kindergarten

For children aged 3-5, an environment focused on early childhood learning and development is provided. The curriculum incorporates Italy’s Reggio Emilia inquiry-based approach, emphasizing learning where children “raise their own questions, experience, and think for themselves.” While English is the primary language, home language experiences are also respected, with balanced development of language, numeracy, social skills, and inquiry abilities. Through play-based learning, project-type activities, and specialized subjects (physical education, art, music), children can enjoyably acquire foundational learning.

Elementary School

For ages approximately 6-11 (Grades 1-6), students build a strong foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics while broadening their interests through diverse learning including science, art, engineering, and physical education. Each day begins with a “Morning Meeting” where homeroom teachers set learning goals, share news, and develop social and learning skills. Cross-curricular projects (e.g., science + engineering + math) are incorporated, developing learning with an awareness of real-world applications. While English is the primary language, a language program is available where students can learn Mandarin or Malay as a mother tongue or second language, with Spanish available from Grade 5.

Upper School

Upper School (Grades 7-12, ages 12-18) is based on the American curriculum, with Grades 7-8 providing education to develop foundational abilities, critical thinking, and global perspectives, while Grades 9-12 offer the choice between regular programs and advanced Advanced Placement (AP) programs. The school holds accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), adhering to international educational standards, and incorporates approaches such as problem-solving, presentations, and research-based learning to prepare students for universities and further education worldwide.
